We all want to live long and strong as men. We like to be independent and capable of doing everything we set out to do. As we age things get harder though, so getting into the groove of living a fitness lifestyle at a younger age will always be ideal but no matter our ages, being active, especially in midlife onwards will reduce the chances of many health issues including:
- Dementia
- Stroke
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Cardiovascular Disease
- Some Cancers
- Premature Death

So you may be asking yourself the question “what should I be doing?” Well, the world is vast and there are so many options but you have to start somewhere so start with what you already know or have had an interest in. Joining a fitness centre will be a good start, a gym or a club of some sort. The benefit being the many experienced people you can connect with in these environments. Fitness can be a lonely road for people; with health issues and weight management to contend with it’s important to build a network around you that will help you stay on the ball.

From the easiest things to get into would be running which is really popular and trending at the moment. You may have seen Sabastian Sawe break the 2-hour barrier in the London Marathon on the 26th April 2026 (last Sunday). If that wasn’t inspiring and special to see then I guess you’ll need more time to get used to physical activity because that man took running to a new realm – time will show just how much so. It helps one getting into fitness lifestyle to build that network, community and affinity with a style of movement that meets their needs and feels right.
Some pursuits will become costly over time but you can’t put a price on your health because it is the most important wealth you have. As for me I’m focused on gym sessions for the moment but BJJ is my sport of choice. I love running too which comes in second. Although I have asthma and running is a challenge, that’s the fact that keeps me going back to it; opening up my lungs and increasing my strength so I can better my running efficiency, that’s what I love. Another thing about running is that you can be unique and yourself – solo or in a group.
Its 2026 my brother, times are dark although the sun is shinning and summer is around the corner. With war and oppression close to home and across the world its imperative we as men better our health to protect that which needs safeguarding. And, how does one do this except by looking after their fitness. Enjoy fitness so you can get better and do better.
